HOBOKO was initially conceived four years ago when I spotted a gap in the marketfor unique, sustainable clothes at affordable. Initially designing for the teenagers’ ever-changing, ever-demanding fashion requests, I quickly learnt that clothes must be casual and relaxed… but they must look good at the same time. I hope HOBOKO clothes tick both those boxes.HOBOKO’s collection now includes designs that work for all ages for both men and women: there’s something for everyone.
The beautiful cotton clothes are hand made in Kenya, on the coast, in a small happy workshop that I visit annually. It’s a great community with which I am enjoying developing a relationship. We are mindful of conscious clothing, and all products are ethically tailored.
The East Coast of Kenya has been hit particularly hard recently as tourism plays such an important part in their life. It’s an added struggle that they didn’t need, but I’m proud that HOBOKO played a small part in contributing to some families’ welfare as the tailors we use kept everyone in work during the pandemic. And more significantly by donating to the Kipungani Schools Trust we sponsor children to have a secondary education that they otherwise wouldn’t have.
We are devoted to designing unique clothes that are affordable and easy to wear –uncomplicated, no-fuss simplicity – made from deliciously superfine soft cotton in glorious colours, inspired by the intoxicating Inidan Ocean. Africa gets under your skin. It’s an over-used cliché …. but it’s true. Anyone who has travelled in East Africa will be familiar with the kikoy and its boundless uses and colourful appeal. For me, it’s important to work with something that puts a smile on my face. When I wear them I’m instantly transported from my North Yorkshire office to the sunshine. HOBOKO isn’t just for summer months – our clothes also brighten up the darkest of winter days with a soft cashmere jumper and petticoat when needed.
I am often asked what HOBOKO means and how I chose the name. It’s simple – it’s just my children’s initials(Hector, Bobbie and Kitty). It means nothing. But it means everything to me.
